Our first strictly limited special edition is here and, as is often the case, is almost sold out shortly after launch. In this article, we want to tell you about the many advantages of alpaca wool. We will also give you important tips on care and give you some interesting information about the origin of the noble wool of the gods.
The wool of baby alpacas is even fluffier!
Why alpaca wool?
Alpacas not only look cute and funny, but their wool also has excellent properties and a special quality, similar to that of Merino sheep:
- Can be worn during any season
- Extremely soft, fluffy and light
- Durable and does not wrinkle
- Temperature and humidity regulating
- Virtually does not absorb any odors
- Natural shine and high quality
Quality of alpaca wool
Alpaca wool is naturally fluffy and soft and is perfect for products that come into direct contact with the skin. It is also very light, which means it can be worn at any time of year. Another plus point is that our headbands made from baby alpaca are great for the colder seasons of autumn and spring. As the wool also regulates temperature and moisture and therefore supports heat regulation, we also use this wool for our thicker alpaca hats . This way you are prepared for the coldest days of the year. Why is baby alpaca wool so comfortable to wear? The headbands and hats in the Alpaca Special Edition are mostly made from baby alpaca from young animals. These fibers are even finer (21 to 22 microns) than the wool from adult alpacas (30 to 33 microns).
Properties and care
In addition to temperature and humidity regulation, another great property of alpaca wool is its odor neutrality. Similar to merino wool, it absorbs almost no odors. The rule of thumb here is: it's better to air it rather than wash it, because the odors evaporate overnight. If you still want to wash the products, you should do this by hand and with pH-neutral detergent. After washing, you should gently pull the hat or headband into shape and leave it to dry lying down.
Origin of Alpaca Wool
Did you know that the Spanish conquerors who brought alpaca wool to Europe called it the "fleece of the gods"? Probably because at that time only the royal family was allowed to wear the wool in the Andes. Alpacas have been bred in the Andes for over 5,000 years and "thanks" to the Spanish conquerors it found its way to Europe. The alpaca wool we use also comes from the Andes. The headbands and beanies are made of 70% baby alpaca wool and 30% dimensionally stable polyamide. The latter is not natural, but ensures that the beanie lasts much longer. Half of the beanie and headband are also made of recycled material and are GRS-certified (Global Recycle Standard).
Our alpaca products are not only fluffy, they are also made from 50% recycled materials.
